Lemsterland (13,625 inhabitants) is the land around Lemmer (10,130 inhabitants).
Lemmer is the capital of this South Frisian municipality and is the southern entrance gate of the province of Fryslan / Friesland, both by water and by road. Two locks, the Lemster lock and the Princess Margriet lock and the A6 motorway form the entrance to Lemsterland Recreation Land.
It is a wetland area with well-known lakes such as the IJsselmeer, Tjeukemeer and the Groote Brekken. These lakes are suitable for all forms of water recreation and fishing, making Lemsterland unique in the Netherlands. The water sports activities, from the construction and rental of the smallest fishing boats to large seaworthy yachts, are concentrated in Lemmer and Echtenerbrug -Delftrahuizen, a twin village on the Friesland – Northwest Overijssel waterway.
The attractiveness of Lemsterland is enhanced by the adjacent forest complexes Gaasterland and Kuinderbos, cycle paths on and along old and new sea dikes to Urk and Kuinre, the beautiful fortified town of Sloten (one of the Frisian Eleven cities), Joure with its subtropical swimming and spa paradise and the flower fields in the head of the Noordoostpolder. This polder at the bottom of the former Zuiderzee fell dry in September 1942, partly thanks to the electrical Bumagemaal near Lemmer.
