Bow thruster

From Wikipedia, d

Bowthruster

The bow thruster, also called head propeller, is a propeller that is mounted in or near the bow of a ship.

A thrust radius to port or starboard can be created with the bow thruster. This increases the maneuverability of the ship at low speeds. Also, the gluing of the fore-ship by crosswind can be prevented to a certain extent during maneuvering. The bow thruster is normally only effective for 3 to 4 knots, above which it has no effect or a slight deceleration, since the ship is moving forwards or backwards.

The bow thruster is a construction wich often consists of a horizontal tube, a tunnel in the prow. The screw is mounted in the middle of this tunnel, which can pump water through the tunnel and thereby creates a weir beam. The screw can turn in two directions in that construction. The openings of the tunnel are provided with a grid, to avoid picking up trash.
