Our sailng trip starting at Yachtcharter Lemmer Holland

We start our journey in Lemmer where we rent a bavaria 35 cruiser sailing boat at Yachtcharter Lemmer from their base at 4-star Yachthaven Iselmar before we sail to the IJsselmeer, we quickly paid a visit to the subtropical swimming pool and sauna where we from our landlord could use for free by means of a pass that was on board. In the city it was very pleasant, the many terraces were full of water sports and tourists, the passage through the Lemster lock went smoothly and the lock keepers were very helpful Hindelopen We now set course for Hindelopen where we sail into the old city harbor after about 6 hours of sailing and find a berth for the night. Hindeloopen is one of the Frisian eleven cities and used to have a large fleet of more than eighty ships. The capital 17th and 18th century captain’s houses still show how rich the Hindeloopers were.

Urk

Urk is one of the most famous former islands in our country and is known for its own traditions. Today the village is located in the Noordoostpolder on the banks of the IJsselmeer, but this used to be very different. Urk has a long history that goes back to the 10th century AD, when it was still an island. The island of Urk has had a strategic location in the Zuiderzee along the shipping routes to Amsterdam for decades until, in 1939, Urk was connected to the mainland by a new dike to Lemmer. Two years later, the Noordoostpolder was completely drained and Urk was officially part of the mainland. The island of Urk has been dependent on fishing for years and due to its isolated location, the inhabitants slowly developed their own culture and customs that still exist to this day. For example, Urk is still spoken on Urk, its own language that does not resemble other dialects in the area. Of course, the Urkers also have their own national anthem and traditional costume that is considered one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands. In recent years, however, traditional clothing has become less and less common in the Urk streets, it is now mainly worn by the elderly and during heydays and special occasions. The traditional customs, the old small center and the location on the IJsselmeer make Urk an interesting attraction. Especially in summer, visitors know how to find their way to the former island. It is wonderful to walk through the narrow streets, inner courtyards and past old fishermen’s houses and dream away to a bygone era. The lighthouse, some monuments and the museum ‘het old town hall’ are other attractions that can be found on Urk. A number of churches in the village can also be visited; Urk is one of the most ecclesiastical municipalities in the Netherlands. Fishing has always been important to Urk and when the Afsluitdijk was built, the sweet IJsselmeer was created and Urk was no longer an island, it was thought that the Urk fishery would soon disappear. Nothing could be further from the truth; the Urkers went fishing in the North Sea, and the village has one of the largest fish auctions in the country and during a visit to Urk you should definitely eat fresh fish on the dike.
